Notes
1 NOTE William was a Quaker farmer at Trenache at Brynoch, Neath, Glamorgan, Wales
William Paddison b 1791 went to South Wales when aged 23. Rented Bryncoch Farm, Neath, and had an interest in the Old Main Colliery, Neath. Later farmed at Trenache, Bryncoch, Neath. Was a JP. Died at Trenache 2 May 1866. Mary died 21 Dec 1840. Buried Friends Burial Ground Neath. 13 children.
William Paddison, was born at Wheatfield Farm, High Bray, Devon in 1791, married in 1816, and moved to Trenache Farm, Bryncoch in 1821. The family was Quaker, but after his wife’s death, many family members were baptized into the Church of England. Trenache was a farm of about 200 acres and was owned by William Paddison. He is known to have had at least 68 grandchildren, many of whom lived in Australia and America.
Remarkable Longevity of J. B. Paddison - Almost a Record
It is a most unusual event for one family of five still living to total over 406 years, says the “The World’s News” yet this record is established by the Paddison family of whom Mr. John Paddison of Perth near Bathurst, N.S.W. is the Australian representative.
On March the 25th, 1821 a Devonshire farmer with his wife Mary, and three children took possession of a new farm house (Trenache) situate 2 1⁄2 miles from the picturesque valley and town of Neath, Glamorganshire, South Wales. The fourth son, Charles aged 78 years lives 2 miles from Chat, on the margin of the Neath Valley. The second son, John, to whom we are indebted for the information here published is now almost 85 years of age and has been living for over 54 years near Bathurst N.S.W.
His sister Julia Frances, born at Trenache - the wife of Henry Harper Curtis, brother of the Rev. Thomas J. Curtis, late of St. Lukes Church, Sydney, lived for five years near and Bathurst N.S.W. - her husband being a watchmaker and jeweler, but she now resides on a cattle ranch named “Pentilla” Denver, Colorado, U.S.A. and is well over 80 years old.
Mr. Paddison’s oldest brother George, who is in his 92nd. year lives at Port Tenent, near Swansea, South Wales and not long since was still able to walk twenty miles in a day of twelve hours.
Two members of this remarkable family have already died, a sister - Mary - at the age of 73 and a brother William at 71 years.
It will be seen therefore that the collective ages of the five members of the family still living is nearly 406 years or an average of over 81 years each.
Mr. John Paddison vary justly claims that this is a record hard to beat in any part of the world.
Note - 1968 - “Trenache” is still standing and in good condition, but although occupied by a worthy owner, is no longer a Paddison habitation.
