Notes

John Paddison and Joan (Kingdon) Paddison lived at Wheatfield farm.

THE PADDISON FAMILY The progenitor of the Paddison family was a Presbyterian curate who came to England from Scotland due to religious persecution in 1666. He settled in Devonshire and was buried in North Moulton churchyard about 1720.

His descendant, William Paddison, was born at Wheatfield Farm, High Bray, Devon in 1791, married in 1816, and moved to Trenache Farm, Bryncoch in 1821. The family were Quaker, but after his wife?s death, many family members were baptised into the Church of England. Trenache was a farm of about 200 acres and was owned by William Paddison. He is known to have had at least 68 grandchildren, many of whom lived in Australia and America.

His family occupied many farms in the area ? George at Blaenbaglan, Abernant and Gellidochlithe, Julia married Henry Harper Curtis and farmed Blaenhonddan, Llwyngriffith and Erw Saithe, Charles at Drehir, Blaenhonddan and Erw Saithe as well as a time at Llandovery, and Edwin at Drehir and Tir Isaf.

A son of William, bearing the same name, married Jennette, daughter of Jenkin Jones of Llwyncoedwr, in 1859. This William was a surveyor and was taught his trade in three months by Alfred Russell Wallace, the botanist. He farmed with his brother at Blaenbaglan before marrying and also worked as an agent for a Quaker firm, the Neath Abbey Coal Company. After marriage, he moved to Llanfairarybryn in Carmarthenshire. In the 1870s he became agent for the Irish and English Provision Merchants and at this time was farming Ynyscedwyn in the Swansea Valley. From 1875 he was agent for the Eaglesbush Estate and farmed Llwyngriffith in the Dulais Valley.
