Note: John Dimig immigrated from Roden Bavaria 31 Aug 1873. The trip to New York took three weeks. John then travelled to Chatsworth, Illinois to joined older brother, Henry, who had come 4 yrs. earlier. John worked as a farm hand for several years and then married Mary Schubert, whose family had also immigrated to Chatsworth from Roden. John and Mary and started farming on a rented farm. They worked hard and saved their money. In 1895, they bought 360 acres SW of Atlantic, IA & built a beautiful 12 room house there in 1901. There were two barns and other outbuildings. Wife, Mary died in 1908. In 1910, John moved to 702 Locust St in Atlantic, IA. He married Clara Beener Curry in 1910. John wrote his name as “Diimig”, using a double “ii” in place of the German dipthong “ü”. His offspring all dropped one “i” and changed their names to “Dimig”. John was civic minded, participated in development of the Cass County Fair Grounds, railroad to Atlantic, was a board member of the local bank and was active in his church. The beautiful farm John and Mary created in 1901 was sold in 1943, reportedly to a man seeking to gain status as a farmer and thus avoid being drafted to serve in WW II. The house was torn down in the 1960’s. In the 1980’s, one barn remained. The razing of Iowa farm buildings was commonplace in the mid 20th century. Farming had become a more mechanized occupation, horses were replaced with tractors. Columbines, and mechanical corn pickers reduced the labor intensive job of being a farmer. Farmers were able to farm large acreages, farms were consolidated and surplus buildings were torn down.
