Re: The Scott County, Iowa, Naturalization Index - 1840 - 1906 I find August Horstmann from Holstein: 1868, district court;book 2, page 5. It states he is under 18 years. I find another August Horstmann and a Ferdinand Horstmann from Holstein: 1879, book 3,page 111. The court is “CC.” I don’t know whether that is circuit court or county court.

The 1880 US cences shows the family (August, Christine, August Jr., Ferdinand, and Edward along with Hanna Winkler) in Liberty, Clinton, IA which is North West of Davenport.

Obituary for August Frederick Horstman Sr. - March 1920

August Horstman one of the oldest residents of Ida Grove, passed away at 5:45 p. m. Tuesday at the home of his son August H. Horstman on South Main Street. Death was due to dropsy and the heart and old age. Mr. Horstman was aged 89 years, 2 months and 2 days. The body will be taken Thursday to Wheatland, Iowa, for burial on Friday of this week.

Mr. Horstman was born in Sarau province, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany January 28, 1831, and came from Germany to Lowden, Iowa, in the fall of 1872, renting a farm which he occupied until the spring of 1884 when he moved to 320 acre farm south of Battle Creek, having purchased this farm in 1882. He improved it and remained on it until the fall of 1897 when he retired and moved to Ida Grove, making his residence here until the time of his Death.

Mr. Horstman was married in Germany to Christina Ochs in 1852. She died in 1894. To this union were born four children, Ferdinand D. Horstmann of Davenport; August H. Horstman of Ida Grove, and Edward F. Horstman of Chicago. Theodore died in infancy. There are nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Mr. Horstman was brought up in the Lutheran faith. He will be missed in Ida Grove, his cheery smile and kindly word of greeting being known to most all of our residents. He lived a life of industry, thrift and square dealing and in his late years he took great comfort in his garden and grounds, which he looked after with painstaking care.

The 1910 census says that August F. Horstman was married to Catherina A. Horstman b. 1846. It also says that August D. Horstman was living with them. August D. would have been August F. Horstman’s grandson. August Frederick’s second marriage of 2 Jun 1898 was a surprise. His first wife, Christianna, died in 1894. I have found nothing in the family history that talked about this marriage. I do believe this is correct as I have several old family photos of the Tamm family which was Catherina’s married name before she married August F. Horstman.
