Possible name was Benett Schimmer (see 1870 DeKalb County Census) Bernard (Ben) Schimmer 1900 Farmer Bernard Schimmer was born in August 21, 1851, in Baden, Germany. He came to the U.S. with mother, sisters and a brother 1854. They came west on train to De Kalb, IL. He was raised there, and when his sisters married and moved to Sac Co., Schaller and Arthur communities, he moved, too. He married Elizabeth Meier, born on April 8, 1861. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann Meier. They farmed in the communities of Schaller, Odebolt and Washta. He speculated in land, buying one farm, selling it at a profit, and then buying another. In 1900 the family moved to Danbury and Bernard purchased present Joe Slota farm for $7.00 an acre. They retired to Danbury in 1912. Children were Joe, Mary (Mrs. Frank Dimig), Bernard, Edward, Henry, Frank, John, Elizabeth (Mrs. Adam Treiber Jr.), Anna (Mrs. Edward Kennaley), William and Andrew. Mrs. Schimmer died on March 19, 1919 after they had retired to Danbury. Bernard moved to Carroll, IA, and married Margaret Lordeman (previous married name). He passed away on August 28, 1928. Frank Schimmer and wife Mary Meier Hupke came here also from the Schaller area. Frank was a carpenter, and the family lived on the edge of Danbury and ran a dairy. Children were Mary (Mrs. John Theobald), Joseph, Anna (Mrs. John Mohrhauser), Frank, Lena (Mrs. John Klein), Bernard (Ben), John, Genevieve (Mrs. Tony Flammang), Loretta (Mrs. Jerome Uhl) and Bertha (Mrs. Eldon Sweitzer).

Gone But Not Forgotten Ben Schimmer, Sr. Passed Away At His Home in Carroll, Aug 20 [28] Ben Schimmer was born in Boden [Baden], Germany, Aug. 20, 1851 and passed away at his home in Carroll, Iowa, Aug. 28, 1928, aged 77 years and 8 days. At the age of twelve years, he with his mother, three sisters and a brother sailed to America and located at Sandwich (DeKalb County), Illinois. Later as a young man he settled on a farm northwest of Odebolt. On June 26, 1879, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Meier of Schaller. To this union were born 11 children, nine of whom are living. In the year 1900 he purchased the farm four miles northeast of Danbury, Iowa, where they resided for twelve years. He and his wife then retired and moved to Danbury. His wife preceded him in death on March 19, 1919. About one and one-half years later, he moved to Carroll, and later was united in marriage on Nov. 16, 1920, to Mrs. Margaret Lordeman. Those left to mourn his death are his wife, nine children and twenty-five grandchildren. All the children were present at the funeral. They are Mrs. Mary Diimig, Dexter, Minn.; Ben, Edward and Henry Schimmer, of Danbury; Frank P. Schimmer and Mrs. Lizzie Treiber of Mapleton; Mrs. Anna Kennalley, Will and Andrew Schimmer of Danbury. The funeral services were conducted from St. Mary’s church at this place Friday, Aug. 31, 1928, Father Scheyler having charge. A kind and loving father, who was honored and respected by all who knew him was placed to rest in the Silent City of the dead. “Smooth the locks of silver hair On our father’s brow with tenderest care, Gather the robe in final fold, Around the form so still and cold, Lay on his bosom, pure as snow, The fairest, sweetest flowers that grow, Kiss him and leave him our heats delight; His pain is over, he sleeps tonight.” Out of town relatives at the funeral were: Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Tolman, Norway, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. John Thies and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thies and family, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Thies and family, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Roeder and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roeder and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Roeder and family, all of Arthur.
