William Barnes, the founder of the family in the new world, originally settled in New Jersey, from whence he removed to Monongalia County, West Virginia, where he passed the remainder of his days. The United States census of 1782 states that William Barnes and six white persons lived with him in Monongalia county. Two sons, John and Frank, remained in Cumberland, the othes coming with the father over the mountains and settling on the Tygarts Valley river two miles above Fairmont. He was a millwright and farmer, and a Presbyterian in religion. He married Mary Marietta.

William Barnes was born in 1735 at Georges Creek, Allegany County, Maryland. He married Mary Marietta circa 1762 at Georges Creek, Allegany County, Maryland. He died in 1824 at Tygarts Valley, Marion County, West Virginia. He was buried in 1824 at Maple Grove Cemetery, Marion County, West Virginia, 392840N0800729W 392840N0800731W.

They came to Western Virginia from George Creek Maryland. William was a Millwright and operated a mill in Maryland. He chose for his first home approximately six acres on the east bank of the Tygart River now known as Marion County, West Virginia near the mouth of a small stream. A short distance above the mouth of the stream was a waterfall. He built a mill at this location and ground corn for the settlers.

In 1985, John Howard WILCOX copied the following information from the DAR genealogical information of Lilian Gertrude MARTIN BOGGESS: William Barnes was in Capt. James Pendleton’s company of Maryland Troops as a Private; also in Col. Charles Harrison’s VA and MD regiment Nov 30, 1776. Was at Valley Forge 6-3-1778. Verified by National Number 317267.
