Peter T., son of Abraham and Mary (Hall) Barnes, was born on Tygarts Valley river, two miles above Fairmont, September 3, 1828, living the present time (1911). He was a merchant and mill owner, operating what was known as the Palatine Flouring Mills, one of the leading industries of that section. He served ten years as justice of the peace of Union District, discharging his duties with fidelity and promptness, and winning in return the confidence and respect of his fellowmen. He was a member of the Seventeenth West Virginia Infantry Volunteers during the civil war. He married March, 1852, Mary, born in Monongalia county, West Virginia, August 13, 1827, daughter of joseph and Mahala (Davis) Vandervort, of Marion and Harrison counties, respectively. Children: Mahala, born April 19, 1853; Anna, May 19, 1855; Lizzie, April 30, 1857; James Walter, September 3, 1862; Francis A., January 25, 1865.
