Notes

Birth: 1865 Death: Apr. 6, 1936 Henry County Missouri, USA

Fred Dietz married Katharina Endres on Jan. 23, 1889. Their children were: Otto and Veronica

Daughter Veronica is listed on the tombstone with her mother Katharina, having died 13 months apart. Otto has a separate marker. Fred’s grave is unmarked.

Fred’s wife Katharina died in Oct. 1910. Her obituary indicated she had been suffering from “dropsy” for over 12 years and since that February had been compelled to sit in a chair, the nature of the disease such that she was unable to lie down. Daughter Veronica died the following year in November, 2011 at the age of 18 from typhoid fever. Son Otto died May 1915 at the age of 25. A Kansas City Star article told of Otto’s diease “a distressing case of a “petrified man” at St. Mary’s hospital in Kansas City”. The article was from the previous year since it indicated Otto was then 24. The article indicated his joints had grown together, his jaw was rigid and it was necessary to extract his teeth. He received liquid food. The trouble started with an attack of inflammatory rheumatism when he was 7 and grew worse. Otto was bedridden for the last 8 years. Physicians called the disease septic arthritis.

OBITUARY FRED DIETZ DEAD Fred Dietz, once a well-to-do farmer north of Clinton, died last Friday at the county home after being in frail health many years. He was about 70 years old. Mr. Dietz came to Henry county around 35 years ago and became one of the prominent farmers of his community. He was of German descent, industrious and capable in his work on his large, beautiful farm north of Clinton. His wife and their two children, a son and a daughter, took great pride in keeping their place in good shape, attractive and prosperous. Death then broke up the home suddenly, taking the wife and daughter, and finally the son after a long illness. The loss was almost more than could be borne, and Mr. Dietz never fully recovered from the blow. He was in Nevada some time and came to the county farm about four years ago. A sister was known to be living several years ago, but a letter sent to her by friends of Mr. Dietz was unanswered. He was a devout member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church during the many years of his residence in Henry county. Father Beelor officiated at the services at this church Friday at 8:15 a.m. and burial was in Englewood on the lot where lie the rest of his family. Pallbearers were John Geraghty, Phil Rentchler, W.H. Meierotto, Will Balke, Maurice Weess, Arthur Farris. The Wilkinson Funeral Service was in charge.
