Notes

August Winter was born on 18 Oct 1864, at Manitowoc, Wisconsin. When he was a small boy, his parents moved to Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He was married on 31 Aug 1892, to Louise Rekward, born on 21 Aug 1873. After six years of residence in the Waukon area, they loaded their belongings aboard a trainload of people bound for Canby, Minnesota. John Lund, a wealthy Canby land agent, had come to Iowa with the purpose of finding settlers for ?the cheap land? in the unsettled Canby area. The Herman Fiets, Fred Winters, and theAugust Winters rode the train together. Since money was short, the women and children rode as passengers, while the men rode for ?free? with the animals. The Canby area was their home, with the exception of eight years, when they lived on a farm near Montevideo, Minnesota. August died on 10 May 1945. Louise died on 18 Feb 1962. Ten children were born; on died in infancy.
