Leo J. Carter, 83, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, February 18, 2013, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 23rd, at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Grant VanderVelden officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00- 7:00 PM Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Leo John Carter was born March 22, 1929, in Forest Mills, rural Postville, IA, the son of John and Myrtle (Winters) Carter. He graduated in 1947 from Monona High School in Monona, IA. After high school he did carpentry work with his father, worked at the John Deere Factory in Waterloo, IA, and for Oliver Tractor Works in Charles City, IA. Leo served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. On September 15, 1957, he married Kay Wallace at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. Leo went to work for John Deere Implement in Monona for a couple of years and then went to work for Waukon Implement. Leo also worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Waukon until he retired in 1991.

Leo was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, deacon, usher and on the property committee. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW and was a member of Kiwanis Club. Leo enjoyed woodworking, following the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include his wife Kay of Waukon; a brother-in-law Willis Johanningmeier of Waukon; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Roy (Zona), Lester (Margaret), and Milton; 2 sisters: Mary (Beverly) Gordon and Mildred Johanningmeier.

Casketbearers are Merle Carter, Dennis Schlitter, Kerry Melcher, Brian Murphy, Bob Harms, David Enyart, Jr., Tom Hyde and Zach Bulman.
